For those of you living in this area, if you have ever been on 430 south and seen the peninsula jutting out near the sandbar in the river, that is where this trail leads. You can see the 430 bridge in the background below.

This picture isn't the best photographic image, but I wanted to try to capture how many dragonflies there were.

This turtle is one of many critters we saw. He was making pretty good time crossing the trail!

We also saw a velvet ant, several lizards (Ainsley grabbed one and his tail popped off in her hand--still wiggling), and I think Jon saw some sort of rodent. The "highlight" (ha!) of my trip was seeing a nice, big, fat, cottonmouth. He had his head lifted up right in the middle of the enormous coiled body. I realize this may be a deal-killer for some of you who might have been thinking of heading to this trail, but he was coiled up right by the edge of the path. Ainsley rode right by him on her bike before I saw him. Jon and Asher were up ahead a ways and did not see him. I had trouble sleeping that night just thinking of how fragile the kids seem compared to such powerful venom.
In spite of being shaken up a bit, I really enjoyed this trail. It took several hours with the kids going at their pace. I think it will be really good when the weather turns a bit cooler.

Beautiful pictures! I especially liked the first one of Asher and Ainsley in front of the bridge. Not so sure I would be crazy about the dragonflies though. :)
