Asher

I noticed I have quite a few Ainsley posts recently, but not too much about Asher. Asher’s imagination has really blossomed recently. Every day he proclaims himself to be something/someone else. Today he was a sheep. He tells me things like, “The sheep is going to the van, “ and “The sheep doesn’t want to wash his hands!” He sometimes assigns me a role. The other day he told me I was Bob [the tomato], and he was Larry [the cucumber]. He was pretending today that a drumstick was a bubble blowing wand, and he was blowing BIG bubbles. He had some sort of a container that he was dipping it in, and when it fell over, he said that his bubbles spilled.

Asher really seems to enjoy music. He seems to naturally be able to really listen to it, recognizing specific songs and parts of songs that I don’t pick up on.

Asher feels things really deeply. Yesterday, I heard horrible screaming, and came running. Turns out, Misty (the dog) found a tree nut that apparently had been collected by Asher, and had the audacity to eat it. I think I have been told twenty times in the last 24 hours, “I don’t like Misty! Misty ate my nut!!” The other day, Jon accidently bumped him off of a bouncy toy. Asher was extremely offended by that, and proclaimed that he didn’t like Daddy. (We’re still working on the concept of disliking the action instead of the person.) :-)

Last night, Asher got up to go potty while I was finishing the dishes. When I went to check on him, I found him sitting on the toilet rubbing baby wash all over his body. Guess the temptation was just too much!

I’ll finish up with one last story about Asher that I found really funny. I had nursery duty during worship a few weeks ago, so I took Asher with me. Toward the end of our time in there, Asher was playing with another little boy who is the same age he is. They were pretending they were eating candy canes—no props, just using their imaginations. It was cute. I wasn’t paying much attention until I heard screaming/crying coming from Asher. I went over to check it out, and Asher managed to wail, “GRANT TOOK THE LAST CANDY CANE!!!” I pulled him close, and whispered, “Asher, they are IMAGINARY candy canes—if he takes the last one, you can just make more!" It was like a light bulb went off in his head. The tears were gone, and he took off to the “candy cane corner” again, where I saw him happily making “assembly” motions with his hands.
