A lick to make you sick

All of you out there with children, does anyone else have this problem? My 3 1/2 year old licks things. I'm not talking lollipops or popsicles, I'm talking things. To date, her worst offenses were sucking on the cart at Walmart (it makes me want to gag just typing this!) and licking the chair in the waiting room at the pediatrician's office. Well, tonight she either topped these or created a 3-way tie for the most disgusting. She licked the sink in the bathroom at a restaurant! Why do children do this?!? (Or maybe I should say, why does my child do this, since I don't see other people's kids doing it!) I have explained, threatened, punished--nothing. I am as vigilant as I possibly can be, but I have to give her some freedom! I keep waiting for her to grow out of this phase. Maybe it is genetic--yesterday Asher licked the dog! (To be fair to Asher, Misty licked him first, but still!) I'll keep you posted on whether Ainsley comes down with a nasty illness.

Hello Albright Family! This is my first comment on your site...feel honored! haha

My Amber does the licking thing as well. Some kids explore by touch; some are content with sight; some are fine with explanations; ours...explore with their mouth. It's just how they see the world.

I have yet to break Amber of this habit. What I've started doing is carry some clorox wipes with me. You can't clean everything, but you can at least wipe the Walmart cart bar down!

Good luck!
