Misty’s Surgery

Warning for the squeamish: there are pictures of Misty’s sutures further on down in this post.

At the beginning of November, we took Misty (our chocolate lab) for her twice yearly checkup and vaccines. She checked out fine, other than the beginnings of a bit of arthritis in a few joints. She turned 8 in December.

About a week and a half after her checkup, Jon found a large, hard, lump right by her shoulder blade. It was big, and it hadn’t been there at her checkup. We took her back in, and the vet decided that since the lump had appeared so fast and since it was hard, we should operate on it to see what it was.

It turns out that it was a benign, fatty tumor. I believe it is called a lipoma, which I think is fairly common in labs. It felt hard because it was under her rib cage. With a little coaxing, we were able to bring her home that night. She was extremely sore for about 48 hours. After that, she slowly got back to normal. We had to keep her from running for 2 weeks. She was a bit stir crazy by the end of the two weeks, but we were glad she was doing ok.

She had internal sutures that dissolved, plus these outer sutures that were staples. We went back 2 weeks following her surgery to have them removed.

Wow! Totally didn't realize that Misty is 8! Doesn't seem that long ago that she was a pup. I am glad that her surgery went well, and her fur is growing back quickly!
